Finished with a hint of cinnamon for subtle warmth, it’s a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing dessert perfect for gatherings, potlucks, or anytime you want a simple but unforgettable chocolate cake.

Ingredients

Cake Ingredients

• 1 c butter
• 4 Tbsp cocoa powder
• 1 c water
• 2 c flour
• 1 tsp salt
• 2 c sugar
• 1⁄2 c buttermilk
• 2 eggs
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 tsp cinnamon

Icing Ingredients

• ¼ c butter
• 4 Tbsp cocoa powder
• 6 Tbsp milk
• 16 oz powdered sugar

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease a cookie sheet that has edges and is about 9x13 in size.
2. In a saucepan over medium-low heat, whisk together the butter, cocoa powder, and water until melted and smooth.
3. In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients.
4. Pour the warm chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients. Add the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla, then whisk until smooth.
5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 20 minutes, until the center is set.
6. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
7. In a saucepan over medium-low heat, whisk the icing ingredients until smooth, then remove from heat.
8. Pour the warm icing over the cake and spread evenly.
9. Let the cake cool for several hours before slicing and serving.
